Before the Appointment: How to Prepare
Clear the path. Remove obstacles along the technicians’ route (driveway to mechanical room) and around the work area, ensuring easy access to the thermostat, vents, ductwork, electrical panel, and gas/electrical connections. Plan your day. Typical installations take 4–8 hours depending on scope, so keep your schedule flexible so you’re available for quick decisions. Gather system info. If replacing an existing unit, have the model/age and any past issues handy. Secure pets and kids. Keep them away from the work zone for safety. Safety first. Do not move or disconnect equipment, gas valves, or wiring; keep combustibles (paint, solvents, cardboard) away from the furnace area; and if you have carbon monoxide (CO) detectors, test the batteries before install day. Home check. Ensure adequate lighting to the work area and clear a staging space for tools and the new equipment carton.
